There’s a common belief among Nigerian shoppers that buying in physical stores is always cheaper. “I’ll just go to Computer Village” is the default response whenever someone mentions online shopping. But is that actually true in 2024?
We pulled real pricing data from CheckPrice.ng across 2,000+ products and compared them with physical store prices in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. The findings challenged everything we thought we knew.
The Data Tells a Different Story
In 62% of cases, at least one online store had the same product cheaper than the average physical store price. The biggest gaps appeared in electronics and phones.
Physical stores have fixed costs — rent in Ikeja Computer Village isn’t cheap, and that cost gets passed to you. Online stores, especially during flash sales, can undercut those prices significantly because their overhead is lower.
Case 1: Samsung Galaxy A15
Computer Village average: ₦115,000. Lowest online price on the same day: ₦97,500. That’s ₦17,500 savings just by checking online first. The phone is identical — same model, same specs, same warranty card in the box.
Case 2: HP Laptop 15-inch (Core i5)
The HP 15 is one of the most popular laptops in Nigeria. Physical store price in Abuja: ₦385,000. Online price: ₦342,000. That’s ₦43,000 difference. Enough to buy a decent external hard drive with the savings.
When Online Wins
- Flash sales and seasonal promotions (Black Friday, end of month)
- Electronics and phones — the biggest price gaps
- When you can wait 2-3 days for delivery
- Products with manufacturer warranty regardless of where you buy
Case 3: Hisense 43-inch Smart TV
This one was dramatic. Physical store in Surulere: ₦198,000. Online: ₦155,000. Almost ₦45,000 gap. TVs are heavy, so physical stores charge more for storage and display space. Online stores ship directly from warehouses.
Case 4: Oraimo Power Bank 20000mAh
Even accessories show gaps. Traffic-side vendors in Lagos sell this for ₦12,000-15,000. Online? ₦8,500. Small amount, but these savings add up across multiple purchases.
Case 5: Thermocool Generator
Generator shopping in Nigeria is stressful enough without overpaying. Physical dealers in Lagos quoted ₦380,000 for the Thermocool Hustler Max. Online price: ₦345,000. That’s ₦35,000 you could spend on fuel instead.
